The U.S. Diversity Visa (DV) Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, provides a pathway for people from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S. to obtain permanent residency. Here’s a breakdown of how candidates are selected:
Random Selection: The U.S. Department of State uses a randomized computer process to select winners from the pool of eligible applicants. No preference is given based on education, work experience, or any other factor—everyone has an equal chance as long as they meet basic eligibility requirements.
Eligibility Screening: To be eligible for selection, applicants must meet two basic criteria:
- Country of Birth: Applicants must be from a qualifying country, typically one with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S.
- Education or Work Experience: Applicants must have at least a high school education or its equivalent, or two years of work experience in a field that requires at least two years of training.
Notification of Selection: Selected candidates are notified through the Entrant Status Check on the official DV lottery website. Winners are not notified via email, mail, or phone, so applicants must check the website to confirm their selection.
Further Processing: Being selected does not guarantee a visa. Selected candidates must complete further processing, including submitting supporting documents and undergoing interviews at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
Visa Allocation: There are 55,000 visas available each year. Candidates are processed on a first-come, first-served basis until the visa cap is reached. It's important to act quickly after being selected, as not all selected applicants will receive a visa.
The entire process is transparent and equitable, ensuring that everyone who meets the requirements has a fair chance to win a Diversity Visa.
